Tocai friulano is the classic wine of the
Friuli region. After some years of featuring it in our
best cuvées, Cuvée Tai, Castelcosa Grigio,
and Sant’Antonio, we now offer it as a monova-rietal.
We gave it the evocative title of “Mari Me”
(My Mother), which is also a very Friulan expression for
both joyful and sad emotions; its dedication to our own
mother will bring, we assure you, unalloyed joy and gladness.
Mari Me displays richly-textured fruit aromas, with scents
of ripe apple and plum, interwoven with floral and herbal
notes. Well-structured yet velvety smooth on the palate,
its bouquet develops into a range of flavours suggesting
near-ripe hay, white peach, and almond.
The vineyards are located on the plateau in the eastern
Friuli foothills, in pebble-rich, loamy-sand soils with
generous amounts of surface rock.
The grapes are hand-harvested into shallow trays, usually
during the latter part of September.
The clusters go directly to the press with no de-stalking;
after the addition of enzimes and a limited amount of
fining agent, the must settles at ca.10oC for 10-12
hours. It is then racked and yeasts added. After a single
post-fermentation racking, the wine remains on the lees
until bottling, generally in April.
Mari Me remains in stainless steel from fermentation
until bottling.
